Personal Development

Many of you would have contemplated having a mentor for yourself at various stages of your career or even in personal life and many of you may have actually had one or a few. Most mentorship programs that don’t go through to completion are those where there is a fundamental mismatch between the Mentor and the Mentee. It is always important that, the Mentee chooses the Mentor, and not the other way around. And it is important that the Mentee sets expectations very clearly with the Mentor, right at the beginning and gain unequivocal acceptance and confidence before embarking on the program. This ensures that the relationship is a win-win and value-add for both.

When we speak of Personal Development and Mentorship, a few meanings cross our mind viz. Advice, Guidance, Trust, Role Model, Experience and more. A Mentor has multiple roles to play i.e. Teacher, Sponsor, Advisor, Agent, Role Model, Coach, and Confidante. A Mentor need not play all the roles in a particular Mentor-Mentee relationship. For example a Mentor could be Teacher for a particular Mentee and a Confidante for another Mentee. More often than not it is more than one role but not every role. Infact it is based on the role required, that a Mentee must choose the Mentor. The Mentee may be looking for a Master of the craft or a Champion of your cause or a Co-pilot or an Anchor. A good Mentor would always customize each role to match the characteristics and needs of the Mentee.
